There is a stray in the neighborhood we let stay in our yard and feed. I would like to take her to the vet but i am worried she will freak out. Any advice?

Your best bet if she is ferral is to try and cage her. That is not always easy but sometimes you can borrow cages from the local pet shelter or society. If you do catch her by hand use a towel and try to keep her face covered or at the very least get a good hold on her front and back legs.
If you can pin it on the ground apply slight pressure to keeep it immobile and then use one hand to grab its back legs (under the thigh area) and then the other to grab it under the front legs. Keeping a pressure that presses them together to help prevent clawing. Then get her in a cage fast! lol

Is the kitty feral or tame? Even tame cats can get very frightened when you suddenly take them, put them in a carrier and car, etc., so it is best to wear thick gloves. And if he is feral, live-trap him into a cage.
