We use a fish oil based product in our dog's water bowls to help keep their coats shiny, as well as control shedding. It seems to really work well - anyone else using another product for coat maintenance?

I have never hear of this. Where did you find out about this ? How much do you use ? What kind of fish oil ??

I know that fish oil is a good source of omega-3 for humans, does it do the same for pets ?

The brand we get is called Nordic Naturals, and we heard about it from a vet years ago as a way to help our dog with skin allergies. We just use a few drops in their bowl, once a day.

You should really try the stuff - we saw a major difference within a few days of using the product!

I use a similar omega-3 supplement, but not in their water. I add it to their food (for the dog and the cats), and it's been wonderful. All 3 tend to have dry skin, and this makes all the difference in the world; their coats are shinier and healthier, and they all enjoy grooming more -- a sign that their skin is less sensitive and more comfortable.

What would happen if you simply rugged the fish oil on while petting or grooming your dog?

Would it smell so bad that it wouldn't be worth the effort?
