OH man - we have one who cries because he needs attention.
We have two that bark cuz they are bored
We have one that gets completely fed up and sleeps on the couch.

Whinning in puppies is normal, they are lonely and usually a wind up clock and a soft towel in his kennel at night will calm him down.

How old is your dog ??

LOL - sounds like quite a madhouse at your place!! The one that does it is my roommate's dog, the oldest guy. He is about 10, and I can not figure out if he does it because he has to pee (which he ALWAYS has to pee lately) or if he is just lonely because the roomie is gone a lot of the time. We always invite him to sleep with us in our room, but sometimes he will still continue to whine...

Maybe he is in pain? Frequent urination can be a sign of urinary tract problems - infection or something similar. I would try to watch him when he tinkles and see whether he does it with difficulty and whether there is blood in his urine.

He could be just lonely, too.

Oh that is sad it almost sounds like separation anxiety. But I agree that if he is urinating a lot there may be some type of a UTI going on and those can get serious if not treated right away.

Most puppies I've had whined at night, they wanted to be held and cuddled, so I guess it is normal for a puppy. They usually grow out of it. Some need extra help from the owner, slowly teaching them to sleep alone. If a grown up dogs whines, I would definitely check him / her for possible health issues.
