PostSubject: Minimum size of fish tank   Sat Jan 31, 2009 2:55 am

One of my friend is interesting in having fishes in home. However we both have conflicting views about the size of the fish tanks he would need. He needed a big one which I felt unnecessary because most of the fishes are comfortable in small tanks. Is there any minimum standards for the size of the fish tank to be.

Tanks size depends on the type of fish and the number of fish.

Some fish can remain comfortable in small tanks, but some fish grow to fit their environment, meaning a bigger tank would allow a bigger fish.

If your friend wants to grow one of those HUGE Oscars, he'll need a big tank!

The general rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. So if you have a 30 gallon tank you can have 30 inches of fish. Like 10 3 inch fish and depending on the type of fish. If the fish is going to be a foot long full grown you would need to take that into consideration.

I hadn't really thought about the size of fish and the size of the tank. That's something I'll have to think about when I try to find a tank.

I did not know that ratio of 1 inch fish to 30 gallons of water. Thank you for informing us. I guess I was suffocating the fishes in my son's fish bowl.
