My vet keeps telling me that my newfy has allergies because his ears are always waxy and stink. I use to have a springer spaniel with floppy ears like my newf and it was not allergies and she suffered the same smell and waxy build up.

I think it is just the fact that the ears are floppy and do not allow air to circulate.
anyone else have any ideas?

If I were you I would try asking another vet. Or try searching about newfy allergies online.

So you have to clean them often? We had a dog like that too- it wasn't allergies- it was as you said. The ears were flopped over and they didn't get cleaned.

I'd check it out online too- see if there is something about allergies online.

I would never have associated that with allergies. Sounds just as you said - little to no circulation of the air which causes them to get warm and moist - hence the wax and bacteria which causes the smell.
