Making your tree pet friendly

We were considering a fake tree this year but with the way we burn with wood and the attitudes of these guys that would be a big mistake!
So we are going to decorate the entertainment system with pine boughs and lights and make it pretty!
One thing we thought about was making edible ornaments this year instead of the putting traditional ones all the way down to the bottom. We were going to start about 1/2 way down with edibles and then work up the other half with standard.

have you all thought about pet friendly ornaments. Not just for cats and dogs, but what for a lizard or bird? or even snake.

I have tried real and fake trees. It does not seem to matter, my cats find some way to tear it up.
