What do you recommend in the way of filters to keep an aquarium clean? We had an aquarium about 10 years ago and had a hard time with the filters getting musty. Has the quality or types of filters improved over the years?

There have definitely been a lot of improvements over the years that is for sure but it depends a lot on what size of tank you are using as well. You need to make sure you read the instructions and are using a tank that is designed to work in a tank the size of yours. Also make sure with replaceable filters that you are replacing them as recommended.

Thank you. We like the 55 gallon aquariums. The fish have more room to swim around and you can get more of a variety of fish. I think not only will the family enjoy an active beautiful aquarium, but I think our cats might enjoy the diversion
as well. Don't worry, I'll make sure I have a good lid on top, so the cats can't torture the poor fish.

they have filters now, if I am not mistaken, that pretty much keep things clean all by themselves. i would say they have come a long ways from early years.

I am currently using an overhead filter, it will take 2 months before the water gets brown. I can clean it easily because the filters on the top and i can wash it easily. I started with just a pump with a plastic filter inside the aquarium, that thing gets too dirty in just a few days. so yeah i don't like those. I also used a under gravel filter, that one sucked literally too. overheads are the best for me.

The filters that have BIO wheels are good. Just change the filter on a regular basis not the Bio wheels. Don't forget to do 20%-25% water changes to help keep the nitrate and nitrite down.

It is also important to note that there may come a time when you need to get rid of the old aquarium and purchase a new one.
